Last year I decided to add blonde highlights to my red hair. I liked them at the time, but eventually got bored with them and decided I wanted to go back to my regular red.

I had dyed all of my hair at a salon before (not just highlights) and it cost a fortune — think over $100! I didn’t want to spend that much again, but I also didn’t want to just let it grow out.

My friend is a former cosmetologist so she agreed to help me dye my hair at home. I went to my local Walmart and purchased Schwarzkopf Keratin Color in Warm Mahogany (5.6). This color was close to my original color so I decided to go for it.

I chose the Keratin Color line because it gives professional quality hair color at home that cares for the hair while providing great color with rich, even colors. Plus, the hair has a great shine and feel even after coloring.

It is important to follow all of the instructions on the package, including doing a patch test and using gloves and putting on old towel or cape over your clothes.

Begin by applying the pretreatment on the dry ends of your hair. Then add the mixed solution strand after strand onto your hair and massage the mixture with your fingertips. Allow it to develop for 30 minutes before rinsing. Finish by applying the Care Complex Conditioner to your hair. The whole process actually takes less than an hour!

How to Straighten Curly Hair

One of my favorite things to do that I don’t get to do very often is to straighten my hair. With very curly hair such as mine it can be a little tricky but I have found some secrets to make it easier.

Here is what you will need:

  • Round brush
  • Hair dryer with concentrator attachment
  • Straightener
  • Smoothing serum

I usually start with damp hair just because I feel it causes less frizz and gives you smoother results. Start by drying the hair using the hair dryer with the concentrator attachment. Focus the hair dryer on the damp hair as you pull it over the round brush and pull it straight.

Continue doing this until the hair is dry. At this point all you may need is the hair dryer and round brush, but my curls are stubborn and need a little extra encouragement to get straight. This is when I bring out the straightener.

I smooth the remaining hair using the straightener on a high setting, curling it under as I go. I do this until all of the hair is straight. Once you have gotten all of the hair straight, work in a little bit of smoothing serum to give your hair that finished look.

You can purchase the Schwarzkopf Keratin Color in the hair color section of your local Walmart. Plus, for a limited time you can try Schwarzkopf Keratin Color for free with their Try Me Free Rebate. Just print out the rebate form, fill in the information, and try the hair color for free.
