I’ve loved reading and writing for as long as I can remember. I was able to read through a chapter book in a matter of days, sometimes less, and I was always writing some sort of story in my trusty notebook.

Reading and writing are things that I hope to cultivate in my boys. Not only will it help them academically but I also feel that it is a great hobby. Its for this reason that I am trying to make reading something that is fun for the boys and something that they enjoy.

One of the ways that I do this is not only by finding reading materials that they love, but also by making reading very real to them. I remember when I was in elementary and middle school one of my favorite things was when authors visited and signed autographs at the school. I always wanted to grow up to be like that (which I’ve done my own book signings since then, but that’s a story for another day).

Last week I took the boys to the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures Words and Pictures program with Dav Pilkey. You probably know Dav from his Captain Underpants and Dog Man books. Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures has been connecting authors with the community with the goal of inspiring creativity and a passion for the literary arts.

The boys each received a cape as well as a copy of Pilkey’s new book, Dog Man: A Tale of Two Kitties. They even had the opportunity to meet Dav Pilkey and have him sign their books!

The best part is that the fun has just begun. Even though Dav Pilkey was the season’s first author, there are still six others coming up, including:

  •  October 1, 2017 – Katherine Applegate/Radical Days
  •  October 15, 2017 – Sherman Alexie
  •  December 03, 2017 – Katherine Paterson
  •  January 21, 2018 – Nicola Yoon
  •  February 04, 2018 – Bryan Collier
  •  March 11, 2018 – Melissa Sweet

There are so many great authors that are in the series that it can be hard to decide which ones to see. Luckily, you can make your own subscription package when you choose three or more lectures. With the purchase of the three lectures you can take 20% off the ticket price.

If you are looking for activities to help your kids develop a love of reading, these events are definitely the way to go. My boys have been talking about Dog Man and Captain Underpants ever since the event! Visit the website to find out more about the Words and Pictures series, or the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures series in general. In addition, when you use my promo code you can get tickets for $8 each. Just follow the link or enter the promo code thirdstopright and apply it to your entire cart. The code is good until the morning of the lecture.
