Energy text on torn paper

Winter is finally here — at least in Pennsylvania. Even though winter can be a beautiful time of year, the high energy bills that go with it aren’t so beautiful. There is something you can do about these high energy bills though. These four steps will not only make your home more energy efficient but will also lower your home energy costs.

Stop the drafts. Drafts are probably the number one reason for inefficient homes. It not only allows unwelcome cold air in, but also allows all of the warm air (that you are paying for!) out. Check under your doors and if there is air coming in under the door you can use either a draft stopper or a towel to keep your warm air in.

Windows are another place where a lot of drafts can get in. Plus it can make for some pretty cold rooms! To remedy this, use a heavy-duty, clear plastic sheet on a frame or tape clear plastic film to the inside of your window frames during the cold winter months. Make sure the plastic is sealed tightly to the frame to help reduce drafts.

Capitalize on the sun’s energy. Even though it is cold outside, it doesn’t mean that you can’t still reap the benefits of the sun. Open curtains and blinds on your south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Plus, the natural sunlight will also reduce the need to turn on lights, further saving you money.

Install a programmable thermostat. You can go high-end with a smart thermostat controlled by your smartphone, but a basic programmable thermostat will work too. When you are at home or awake, turn the thermostat as low as possible. When you are away or asleep you can move the thermostat back several degrees. Did you know that if you turn your thermostat back 10° to 15° for eight hours and save around 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills? That really adds up!

Shop around for rates. Did you know that in states such as Massachusetts, Ohio, Connecticut and Pennsylvania you can choose your own energy provider? That means you have the freedom of choice as well as the ability to shop for the best price for your home’s electricity. In fact, you can save up to 16%* over MetEd’s electricity rate, and up to 12%* over Penn Power’s electricity rate. There’s more! Save up to 10%* over Penelec’s electricity rate!

In select areas, Direct Energy is offering competitive savings in January to help you start the new year right. When you switch, you can benefit from a fixed-rate energy plan and enjoy rate stability. All you have to do is visit the Direct Energy website, enter your zip code and check out your potential savings!

*All savings refers to the current difference between Direct Energy’s fixed rate offer and the Utility’s current Fixed Rate for Basic Service as of January 8, 2016, and does not include any other component of the electricity bill. Utility rates are subject to change and there may be no savings following the respective official utility rate change date. Direct Energy’s fixed rates include electricity supply charges only and excludes delivery/transmission charges, taxes, and all other utility-related charges. Offer is limited and valid for new residential customers only.
