This week I had the opportunity to review one of NCircle Entertainment’s newest DVDs, The Snowman and the Snowdog, which is the sequel to the 1982 Christmas Classic The Snowman. I remember watching the original when I was a kid and I was curious about how this one would stack up. I wasn’t disappointed!

When a young boy and his mother move to a new home, the boy discovers a secret box hidden under the floorboards of his bedroom.  In the box, he finds a hat, scarf, some lumps of coal and a shriveled tangerine – it’s a snowman-making kit! Later that day it starts to snow.  The boy builds a snowman, and with a little spare snow left over, a Snowdog.  That night they come to life and take him on a wonderful adventure.  As dawn breaks they fly home, but before the boy returns to bed a magical surprise awaits him…

As in the original version, there is no dialogue only animation and music. I wasn’t sure how E would like this — I was concerned that without dialogue he would lose interest quickly. As soon as I hit the play button he was hooked. In fact, he sat unmoving on my father (Pap’s) lap the entire time. My dad has a great way with relating to kids and he narrated it to E perfectly. In fact, E watched the movie TWICE in a row!

Thirty years after the original, this sequel is definitely as charming as the original. It is especially nice now that I am a parent to be able to see the movie through my son’s eyes.

At $9.99 this movie would be the perfect stuffing stuffer for any children on your holiday gift list. You can purchase it online through Amazon or you can pick up a copy at your local Barnes & Noble.

In addition, I would like to give my readers the opportunity to win a copy of the Snowman and the Snowdog, courtesy of NCircle Entertainment. This giveaway will run now through 11:59 p.m. EST on December 3. Just enter using the form below!
