Who is ready for Halloween? The weather is about to start getting cooler and the leaves will begin to fall. This can only mean one thing, Halloween is right around the corner!

I love decorating for Halloween and I’m always looking for fun, homemade decorations for the house.

This year, Ryan had a great idea for something to decorate the front porch. I have several old sewing machines in the basement just waiting for the right project. For this one, Ryan thought one would make the perfect candy bowl stand.

Halloween Candy Bowl Stand

Making a Halloween Candy Bowl Stand from an Old Sewing Machine

So I started out with a plain brown sewing machine stand I picked up for under $10 at the thrift store. I removed the sewing machine and all of the internal hardware. I then wiped it down with cleaner to get a nice, clean surface to paint.

Using a screwdriver, I removed the hardware on the front and filled in the holes with wood filler.

I decided to paint the sewing machine with purple and black paint. The lid of the stand and the legs I painted black and the body of the stand I painted purple. Since I knew the top of the stand would get a lot of use, I decided to seal the top with clear wax.

Unfortunately, the wood filler didn’t conceal the holes that the hardware on the front left so I had to get creative. I had a bag of small, plastic skulls which I realized would be perfect to create “knobs” on the front of the stand. I used a combination of hot glue and E6000 and adhered the skulls over where the holes were.

With the lid to the sewing machine open, you can see the hole where the sewing machine once was. I thought this would be the perfect place to put the candy bucket, so I picked up a black plastic bucket from the store and placed it in the hole.

The problem was that the bucket didn’t fill the hole completely, and you could see around the edges.

I had picked up some Halloween spooky fabric, so I used it to tuck in the holes and drape around the candy bucket.

Now the stand is ready for trick-or-treaters. This stand is perfect if you won’t be home on Halloween night and want to set a bucket of candy out for the kiddos.

Skeleton sitting with candy bowl

One of my favorite props to go with the candy stand is a posable skeleton I got on Wayfair.com. This skeleton is perfect for perching on the lid to the candy bowl stand.

There are all sorts of ways that this skeleton can be posed, but I am partial to him sitting with his hand in the candy bowl!

No matter how you use your skeleton and candy bowl stand, this is a really fun Halloween craft and something that will definitely come in handy on Halloween night!
