FinishedScratchingPostTitle2I have five cats. Yes, you read that right. In addition to coming in different sizes and colors, each of them have entirely different personalities. This also meant that figuring out which one is doing what, which one is mad about what, or who wants what can be confusing.

At different times each of the cats have done deviant things such as when Tango would pee on my husband’s book bag when we started dating, hiding in the rafters or in boxes, or even scratching our basement banister.

ScratchedBanisterWe do have cardboard scratchers, but for some reason the cats prefer using our wooden basement banister to scratch. In fact, they have scratched it almost the whole way through. This is why I decided to make them a custom scratcher railing so that they can satisfy their need to scratch while not causing damage.

StartingWrappedPostI began by purchasing an unfinished porch post from our local hardware store as well as some sisal rope. Using some industrial-strength glue, I glued one of the ends of the rope to the post and clamped it until it dried.

WrappedPostAfter the glue dried, I unclamped the rope and then began wrapping the rope around the post. You will want to keep the rope rows nice and tight together. You may find it helpful to put a staple in the rope every so many rows to keep the rope tight. You will want to be sure to remove these staples later so the cats’ claws don’t get stuck in them.

Use the entire spool of rope and glue the other end of the rope to the post. Once it is dry, remove the staples and you can install the post.

ToysAttachedtoPost2Afterwards, the kids and I made a few toys to embellish the post with, including leather strings, bells, and feathers. These are all to entertain the cats as well as entice them to use the scratching post.

Even though my cats are complex, and even a little crazy, but choosing great litter is simple. This is why when it comes to the litter boxes, I choose Cat’s Pride® Fresh & Light Ultimate Care®.
