birdseedtreatsLife with two young boys is hectic. I often feel that we are constantly busy from the time that the boys wake up in the morning until my head hits the pillow at night.

Here’s the thing about these years though. They are fleeting. While there are days where I feel like I can’t wait for bedtime so I can have some time to myself, I also know that before I know it these little boys will be young men. That’s why I try to make the most of all the time we have together.

This means pushing them on the swings on the swing set even when I’d rather sit and observe, or making a mess in the family room with them even though it means picking up toys later. There will be a time for a clean house or sitting and reading a book, but that also means my boys will be grown — and that’s not something that I want to rush!

One of the things that my boys love the most is when we do crafts and activities together. Since all of the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks are busy preparing for winter, the boys and I decided to give them a hand by making some seed-covered toilet paper tubes.

These toilet paper tubes are the perfect treat for wildlife and also for kids to be creative with, especially because there is no right or wrong way to do it.

You will need:

  • several empty toilet paper tubes or paper towel rolls
  • yarn or twine
  • peanut butter
  • seeds

Punch two small holes on opposite sides of the tube. Thread the yard or twine through the holes and tie a knot. This is what you will use to hang the tubes.

Allow the kids to spread the peanut butter on the outside of the tube. Make sure it is thick enough to hold the seeds.

Pour a generous amount of bird seed into a bowl or tray. Roll the peanut butter-covered tube in the tray until the tube is completely covered.

All that is left is to hang the tubes in a tree or on a hook and watch the wildlife enjoy the treat!

This is one of those activities that can be messy but it is something that your kids will love to do and is a great way to bond. Peanut butter can be wiped up and seeds vacuumed up, but the memories last forever.
