TravelingWithPets_TitleI adopted my cat, Tiger, back when I was in graduate school. Well, it was more like he adopted me. I found him outside of my apartment and his fur was dirty and matted and he looked as if he had been in a fight.

Tiger_in_Condo2I am the kind of person who can never turn my back on an animal in need. I took him in, took him to the vet, and before long was part of the family.

I am going to admit that I don’t like traveling without my pets. Even back in graduate school when I would go home for the weekend, I would take my cats with me.

Although I like having my pets with me even when I travel, there are some important things to take into consideration. That’s why I came up with this list of tips for traveling with your pets.

Tip #1: Never, never, never leave your pet in a hot car.

I don’t care how quick you will be in the store or wherever you are going. It only takes minutes for the temperature in the car to rise to a deadly level. Even opening your windows some won’t help.

Tip #2: When traveling in a car, it is probably best to keep your furry friend in a pet carrier.

TigerInCrateChoose a carrier that gives your pet enough room to turn around comfortably. By keeping them in the carrier, it will keep your pet from being a distraction, or worse, from interfering with the pedals.

Tip #3: Take frequent potty breaks.

I’m not talking for just you either. Stop every few hours to allow your pet to use the bathroom and stretch his legs. If you have a cat, take a small shoebox lid and a bag full of cat litter. After your cat is done, you can just throw everything away.

Tip #4: Be sure to pack any essential medications.

Tiger takes daily steroid medications for his allergies. This also means that I have to be sure to take the medication wherever we go.

Tip #5: Pack food, water, and snacks.

  1. I agree that it’s important for people to remember to not leave their pets in the car while traveling, especially in the summer. And it’s definitely easy to overlook packing medications. Great reminders, thanks for sharing, Rachel! #client
