We all want to be significant. This is natural and good — evidence of our God-given desire for meaning and purpose. However, our longing for significance can easily twist into an insatiable craving for approval, recognition, and praise. If left unchecked, this craving will enslave us. — JR Vasser, Glory Hunger

When I was young I used to dream of being famous. I thought about being an actress, journalist, entrepreneur, or even president! I would have the money to buy whatever I wanted, the power to make impactful decisions, and the notoriety that people on the street would recognize me. If I had these things, life would be good.

Even though I used to think all of those things would make me happy, Satan really is the Great Deceiver. If you really stop and think about it, would you really want to be a billionaire, movie star, or even president? In fact, Hollywood celebrities often have failed marriages and addiction problems. Lottery winners who hit mega jackpots often find themselves wishing that they hadn’t won as the money far from solves their problems. Also, consider how many times politicians compromise their morals, get involved in scandals, or just flat out abuse their power.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are millionaires that are happy, politicians that are noble, and celebrities who aren’t just craving fame. However, I am sure it is safe to say that these are exceptions to the rule.

Just like JR Vasser in the book Glory Hunger explains, God wants us to try and be the best people that we can be God gave us these talents and he wants us to use them! However, he also wants us to remain humble and realize that it is He who gave us these gifts so instead of keeping the glory for ourselves we need to be giving it back to God.

The road which is paved with self-love is wide, whereas we are called to walk the narrow road.

Glory Hunger, I feel, illustrates extremely well how easy it is for us Christians to fall into the trap of narcissism. How many of us have ever compromised our integrity in order to get ahead or be recognized? I’m sure we all have.

However, as always, there is hope. God is perfect and He can help is to overcome our own selfish ways and use the glory for His good, while still blessing us along the way.

Speaking of blessing, Family Christian is giving me the opportunity to give away a $10 Family Christian Appreciation Certificate so that you can purchase your own copy of Glory Hunger, or any of the other amazing books that Family Christian stores offer. In fact, over the course of the next two weeks I am going to be giving away over $100 in Family Christian appreciation certificates.
