I received a copy of Checkmate for review purposes, however all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Screen Shot 2015-01-07 at 9.55.31 PMThey say that all good things come to an end. Sadly, this is the case with Steven James’ newest novel, Checkmate. This is the eighth and final book in James’ The Bower Files series. Readers have nothing to fear, however, as this series (unlike some others) goes out with a bang instead of a fizzle.

What is great about The Bowers Files series is that even though this is the last novel in the series you don’t need to have read the other seven in order to understand the action. Checkmate alludes to things that happened in past books, but James fills in enough information so that a seasoned reader won’t be bored, but that a new reader wouldn’t be lost.

Checkmate is a page-turner from beginning to end. This book is full of twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing.

This book completely shatters any stereotypes of what a “Christian novel” is. When most people think of Christian books, they think of the romance novels by Beverly Lewis or any number of the non-fiction books. I really enjoy suspense and thriller novels but the violence, sex, and bad language that are usually included with these sort of novels. It is so refreshing that an author like Steven James can create a convincing, riveting novel without all of the undesirable aspects.

You can pick up a copy of Checkmate at Family Christian stores or online. Are you feeling lucky? I am giving away a $10 Family Christian Appreciation Certificate to one lucky blog reader. This is in addition to my other two Family Christian giveaways! Just enter through the form below!
